DOIs: 10.5067/TEMSC-3MJC6 & 10.5067/TEMSC-3MJ06

The PO.DAAC is pleased to announce the public release of the JPL Tellus GRACE Mascon RL06 version 1.0  datasets. More information regarding the GRACE mission is available from the GRACE Tellus website and also via PO.DAAC’s GRACE mission webpage. Several enhancements over the previous release (RL05, DOIs: 10.5067/TEMSC-2LCR5 & 10.5067/TEMSC-2CL05) are implemented including:

  • Updated background force models, including static gravity field model, ocean tide model, and atmosphere and ocean de-aliasing product (AOD1B).
  • Inclusion of on-board GNSS measurements during the gravity solution inversion.
  • Updated “accelerometer transplant” product during the final months of the GRACE mission when only one accelerometer was available.
  • Changed mean pole model from the IERS2010 conventions to a linear mean pole model.
  • Improved parameterizations.
  • Changed the glacial isostatic adjustment model (GIA) to ICE6G-D. This is removed from the solution to infer water height changes.
  • Improved metadata information compliant with NASA’s recommended metadata standards and best practices.

This release comprises two Mascon RL06 datasets, both of which provide monthly averaged Liquid Water Equivalent Thickness with global coverage gridded to 0.5-degree resolution from April 2002 to June 2017.  Although the data are represented on a 0.5 degree lon-lat grid, the native spatial resolution of the data is three degrees, as they represent 3-degree equal area spherical caps.  The datasets are in netCDF format with adherence to CF-1.6, ACDD-1.3 and ISO-8601 metadata standards.

The JPL Tellus GRACE Mascon RL06 version 1.0 datasets are described and discoverable via the PO.DAAC data portal.  Data can be accessed through Drive (https), OPeNDAP, THREDDS and web services. Also available are technical documentation, other reference materials, and guidance on how to cite the data.

Important Information for Users:

NASA is in the process of deprecating the use of the FTP protocol for data and information access. PO.DAAC is pleased to offer PO.DAAC Drive as a robust FTP alternative for browsing and retrieving data at PO.DAAC (podaac-tools.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/). It offers file navigation and download through an interface served directly through your browser, and with a familiar look and feel. It also allows users to access data via a command line so that interactions can be easily scripted.
