The PO.DAAC is pleased to announce the public release of six NOAA GHRSST AVHRR FRAC v2.80 Sea Surface Temperature (SST) Datasets from three Metop First Generation (FG) satellites, MetOp-A, -B, and -C. This release covers fully ingested forward data stream and partial historical data records. The 2nd announcement will be released after the whole data records are ingested.

The data are produced by the NOAA Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) with the Advanced Clear-Sky Processor for Ocean (ACSPO) enterprise system, and made available in two processing levels: as ungridded swath Level 2 Preprocessed (L2P) and 0.02° equal-grid Level 3 Uncollated (L3U). Both are reported in 10min granules (144 granules per 24hr interval) in NetCDF4 format, compliant with the GHRSST Data Specification version 2 (GDS2). Detailed information about the GHRSST L2P/3U products is available from PO.DAAC’s GHRSST mission webpage.

The datasets cover the full MetOp-FG era, for which quality infrared data are available (MetOp-A: 1 Dec 2006-present; MetOp-B: 19 Oct 2012-present; MetOp-C: 4 Dec 2018-present). Data are uniformly processed with ACSPO v2.80, which employs variable regression coefficients tuned against quality controlled in situ data from drifters and tropical moorings. Sub-skin SSTs from three satellites are consistent to within several hundredths Kelvin. Validation against independent Argo floats is well within the NOAA SST specs (±0.2K accuracy and 0.6K precision). Typical sensitivities of sub-skin SSTs to true SST are 0.93-0.96 at night and 0.86-0.90 during the daytime. Subtracting the SSES bias (also reported in the files) results in an improved consistency with depth SST. Thermal fronts (position and intensity) are reported in the files.

The datasets are described and discoverable via the PO.DAAC dataset information pages with the following DOIs. The dataset information pages also provide access to the technical documentation and guidance on how to cite the data.
