The PO.DAAC is pleased to announce the public release of the NAVO GHRSST L2P Sea Surface Temperature (SST) v1.0 datasets from the GOES Imager sensor on the Electro-Optical Infrared Weather System – Geostationary satellite (EWS-G1). The EWS-G1, formerly GOES-13, is the first Department of Defense owned geostationary weather satellite, which has been repositioned over the Indian Ocean (IO) region at 60.0° West longitude in January 2018 and fully operational since September 8, 2020.

The EWS-G1 L2P SST is produced by the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO) based on the GOES-13 SST algorithm with the 4-micron (band 2) and 11-micron (band 4) channels, providing daytime and nighttime SST. Each file contains a full disk of coverage (lat: 80° North to 80° South, lon: 140° East to 20° West) with 0.04° spatial resolution and 30-min temporal resolution. The datasets are formatted in netCDF-4, in compliance with the Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) Data Processing Specification version 2.0 (GDS2). Detailed information regarding the GHRSST Level 2P products are available from the GHRSST website and also via PO.DAAC’s GHRSST mission webpage.

The datasets are described and discoverable via the PO.DAAC dataset information pages. Users are encouraged to visit PO.DAAC Cloud Data Page for detailed information about cloud data access. We recommend users to download the data using the data-subscriber tool. Currently, the cloud OPeNDAP service is available, but it only works with the DAP4 data model which is invoked by adding the suffix “.dap.nc4” to the query request.
